The New Prisons included a room dedicated to torture, governed by strict rules. The use of fire was forbidden for safety reasons.

Only so-called “white tortures” were allowed, including the pillory and the rope. In the case of the rope, the victim was lifted by the arms tied behind the back, causing severe pain and difficulty breathing.

The room was not soundproof. Screams could be heard by other prisoners, turning torture into a tool of psychological intimidation.

It was a space designed not only to punish, but to maintain control through fear.
