Just after passing the island of San Domenico, we can see the historic center of Chioggia, Vigo Square, and Vigo Bridge from which we sail north. The Vigo bridge connects the square to the Riva or Fondamenta Vena. It is the most majestic bridge in the city, built in 1685 with Istrian stone and later decorated with bas-reliefs and lions.
The “Piazzetta” – a little square – is dominated by a column with the winged lion of San Marco on top, made of Greek marble. Due to the modest size of the lion, which symbolizes the Serenissima, the chioggiotti call it “el gato“- the cat. This demonstrates the close relationship between the two cities: as a matter of fact, Venice recognized Chioggia as its “younger sister”.
Today the city presents a vibrant and colorful old town, where the fishing boats and the famous fish market are among the most beautiful landmarks of the island. The excellent local gastronomy also attracts many tourists with Chioggiotti typical dishes based of fish and vegetables from the lands of Sottomarina.
