The Original Burano laces are characterised by the extreme complexity of the design, the processing technique and the usage of very fine threads (cotton, linen, silk, gold or silver). As a consequence, the production is extremely long and study and commitment, often decades old, are a must.
Sandra Mavaracchio is a dean among the master lacemakers of Burano. She began to nourish the art of needle lace at the age of eight, learning it from her mother who, in turn, learned it from her grandmother. The artisan has mastered other techniques (such as the “air stitch” or the “rede stitch”) to challenge herself at oiled paper drawing and its warping. Her creations are based on the classic models of Burano island and they are typically inspired by religious, floral or faunal themes, without neglecting the creation of new subjects of personal taste.
