A little further away, on your left, you can see the island of Sacca Sessola. It is one of the largest and youngest islands of the Venetian lagoon, built in the second half of the nineteenth century.
The name is composed of two parts: Sacca indicates an artificial island created by the burial of a water basin whereas Sessola is a typical tool of the lagoon used to remove water from inside the boats and its shape reminds of the shape of the island.
In the past it was a hospital for contagious diseases such as cholera and tuberculosis, it was then transformed into a new pneumological hospital complex.
Today you can find on this island the luxury hotel JW Marriott which is also called Island of Roses.
