On your right you can now see a long white sea wall in Istrian stone, it is called Murazzi and it has been built in 1744 by the Serenissima to defend the coast from the storms coming from the Adriatic Sea. From that moment on, the Murazzi are always subject to thorough control and monitoring by the Magistrate for the Waters considered their important function of protecting the city. You can find the Murazzi not only in Pellestrina but also in Sottomarina and in Lido di Venezia.
Despite several consolidation and protection works, there has been a great flood on 4th November 1966 during which the walls broke at three different points, and more recently, in 2019, an exceptional tide called Acqua Granda caused critical damage throughout the lagoon and especially in Pellestrina.
