Although not directly related to Marco Polo, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a symbol of the trade and commerce that flourished in Venice in Polo’s time. Once a bustling trading post for German merchants, it is a reminder of how Venice was a crucial junction in the network of trade routes travelled by Polo himself. The building’s current form shows the richness and cultural exchange that characterised Polo’s Venice. Originally, the palace was adorned with frescoes by Titian and Giorgione.
In the past, it functioned as a post office, but today it has been beautifully restored and transformed into an exclusive luxury shopping centre. Highlights include a visit to the rooftop terrace that offers spectacular views of the famous Rialto Bridge and the city’s fascinating surroundings.
